A 31 year old riding a motorcycle, was seriously injured Wednesday night after a head on collision in the Balboa Park area. The motorcyclist failed to handle a sharp curve going 45 mph near Redwood Street. The man was driving south on Pershing Drive around 8:45 p.m. San Diego police detective Dan Wall was first on the scene. Detective Wall reported that the motorcyclist crossed over a double yellow line colliding with a Nissan Altima heading north. The man driving the car that was struck by the motorcycle was a 25 year old man. He suffered cuts from flying glass and other minor injuries. The motorcyclist suffered more serious injuries. The rider endured multiple fractures and head injuries. Police do not believe that alcohol played a role in this accident. Investigators think that speeding was the main cause of the accident. The motorcycle was going 45 mph in a 35 mph zone.
A motorcyclist was injured Wednesday in Allied Gardens after a Senior Citizen made an unsafe lane change in front of him, according to SDPD. The Motorcyclist was heading north on Waring Road at Orcutt Avenue just after 4 p.m. when a 90-year-old driver in a Toyota turned left into oncoming traffic, police said. The motorcyclist could not avoid the collision and hit the car on its side. He was taken to a hospital with broken bones and a fractured pelvis. San Diego police have submitted the woman’s license to the Department of Motor Vehicles for a reevaluation where she will have to take a both a written and driving test before it is determined if she is allowed to continue to drive, Detective Dan Wall said.
A motorcyclist suffered major injuries and was airlifted to a hospital Today after colliding head on with a utility van on the Banner Grade east of Julian, according to police investigators. The crash occurred about 10 a.m. on Route 78 east of Wynola Road, on the winding steep road between Julian and the Anza-Borrego Desert. Witnesses reported that the motorcyclist struck an AT&T utility truck head on, according to the California Highway Patrol. It wasn’t clear if the truck was moving or parked. The injured motorcyclist was taken by ambulance to the Julian fire department and loaded into a medical helicopter to go to a hospital. California Highway Patrol officers closed the roadway for more than an hour as they investigated the crash.
A man riding a Triumph motorcycle died early Sunday afternoon after he crashed into an oncoming Yamaha motorcycle on a mountain road near Julian. The man tried to illegally pass a third motorcycle — a Harley Davidson — on Wynola Road around 3:15 p.m. when he crashed head-on into a the Yamaha. The Triumph rider was airlifted to a Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, but was pronounced dead upon arrival. The driver of the Yamaha was taken in an ambulance to the same hospital with a compound fracture in his left leg. The third motorcyclist had minor injuries. The CHP released no additional information on Sunday night.
LA MESA — One motorcyclist died and a second motorcyclist was injured in a crash on southbound state Route 125 to eastbound Interstate 8 Tuesday night, authorities said. Passing motorists reported about 7:37 p.m. that a motorcycle was down in the lanes, but they couldn’t see the rider, who appeared to have been thrown off the roadway, the California Highway Patrol said. Officers found a Harley Davidson on the transition lanes between the two freeways. The rider had been thrown off the freeway and landed below on the shoulder of the La Mesa Boulevard on ramp to eastbound I-8, CHP Officer Larry Landeros said. A second motorcycle rider was taken to a hospital. Landeros said he didn’t know how the accident occurred..
SAN DIEGO — At least 45 accidents as well as some street flooding was reported Monday morning on the county’s freeways as morning commuters made their way on wet, slick roads. The busiest hour for officers was between 7 and 8 a.m. when 24 crashes were reported, the CHP said. Between midnight and 7 a.m., 19 collisions were tallied, the California Highway patrol said, Drivers also had to find a detor entrance to south Interstate 5 after the Carmel Valley Road on-ramp was shut down due to flooding. CHP Officer Ray Scheidnes said people just drive too fast for the conditions, “When the pavement is wet they should automatically slow down,” he said. Most of the accidents so far have been fender benders and solo spin outs, some involving minor injuries. No major injuries have been reported, Scheidnes said.
A 42-year-old motorcyclist who was killed Monday in Bay Park has been identified by the Medical Examiner’s Office as Dean Lawrence Brodie of San Diego. Brodie was riding north on Mount Acadia Boulevard near Tecolote Canyon Golf Course about 2:15 p.m. when he lost control of the motorcycle. It struck a sign post and then a guardrail. San Diego police received a 911 call from a passer-by who saw him lying on the pavement unconscious. Brodie was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he died at 3:16 p.m. of blunt-force torso injuries, a medical examiner’s report said. He is survived by his wife and daughter.
A 48-year-old Temecula resident was killed Sunday when he lost control of the motorcycle he was riding and slid into a truck on Lilac Road in Valley Center, the Medical Examiner’s office reported. Bradley Robert Eckhardt was riding a 1969 Yamaha R350 southbound on Lilac, just south of West Lilac Road, at about 10:30 a.m. when he collided with a Dodge Ram 250 towing a loaded horse trailer. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Medical Examiner’s office said it is not known why he lost control of the motorcycle. An autopsy is pending.
RINGTOWN, Pa. — A 19-year-old Pennsylvania man riding his bicycle to San Diego to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research was struck and killed by an SUV in New Mexico. Officials say John Anczarski, of Ringtown, Pa., died Tuesday of injuries suffered a day earlier in New Laguna, N.M., about 50 miles west of Albuquerque. Anczarski, a University of Colorado engineering student, and three friends called their project “The Pink Pedal.” The group said it had raised several thousand dollars for cancer research. They left Pennsylvania on May 23 and expected to reach San Diego next month. Police say the investigation into the crash has been turned over to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, because the accident occurred on tribal land. No charges have been filed.
ESCONDIDO — A man was killed and his wife was injured early Tuesday when they were thrown from their motorcycle after running into a barbecue that had fallen onto a North County freeway. he couple, identified as David Jensen, 49, and Bernadine Jensen, 52, of Lakeside, were heading south on Interstate 15 just north of Via Rancho Parkway on a 2005 Harley-Davidson about 12:35 a.m., said California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Newbury. They were traveling in the fast lane when they struck the barbecue, which had fallen off a vehicle. “They drove right into it,” Newbury said. The impact sent the grill rolling into one of the middle lanes, where it was hit by 2008 Toyota Prius being driven by a 31-year-old Carlsbad woman, authorities said. The car hit the barbecue and then struck David Jensen, Newbury said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife suffered a broken left ankle and other injuries and was taken to a hospital, Newbury said. The driver of the Toyota stopped. Officers are investigating and will determine if there were any witnesses who saw the barbecue come off the vehicle, Newbury said. If that driver can be located and it can be proved that the driver was aware that something fell out of the vehicle, the motorist could face criminal charges or be held civilly liable. According to state law, the only thing that can legally come off a moving vehicle is water and bird feathers, Newbury said. All southbound lanes of the freeway were shut down until the early morning hours.
