Logan Heights Fire Injures 2 Does 3/4 Million in Damage

logan fire100517fire_t352SAN DIEGO — A fire sparked by men trying to cut an aluminum propane tank for scrap metal spread to a two-story building Monday, causing $700,000 in damage and leaving two people injured. The fire was reported about 11:50 a.m. on Imperial Avenue near 28th Street in Logan Heights. The building had been converted into four apartment units, said San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Maurice Luque. Luque said the propane tank was empty but was pressurized, and sparks from the saw the two men were using to cut into it ignited the fumes still inside the tank. “That caused a flash explosion that burned the car that was parked in the back,” Luque said. The fire damaged a second car and then spread to the building. The two men ran up a back staircase to the second floor and “the fire followed them up the stairs,” Luque said. One of the men, a 60-year-old resident, jumped from the roof of the building. He wasn’t injured by the fall but suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to a hospital for treatment. A 52-year-old woman who was in an upstairs unit went through a window to the roof of the building, suffering minor injuries to her feet, Luque said. The fire caused $600,00 in damage to the structure and $100,000 to its contents. It took firefighters about 25 minutes to put the fire out because there were many “nooks and crannies and odd spaces” in the building when it was converted into apartments, Luque said.
